There was a time when the only way to deal with male baldness was to wear an ugly toupee. You could look like Brad Pitt and you could adorn an Armani suit, try as you may you will not make a toupee look cool on you. With that said hair implants have come a long way and is just about the best way to go back to the way you looked with your full set of hair.

Hair transplant surgery is not without some discomfort and complication though. Whether or not you deem those downsides too much of hassle or worth the trouble is of course up to you. Times have changed and there are plenty men who fashion shaved head without an inkling of shame and rightfully so. Baldness often runs in the family and there are studies in human genome that just about confirm that. You are only trying to get your hair back and there is no shame in that either.

Although hair transplant surgery is an outpatient procedure, you should not fool yourself into thinking that you’ll go right back to your old daily routine. To give you a good example, many people think they could drive themselves home after the procedure. They don’t realize that it takes a bigger toll on their body than one could easily imagine. Let me give you a word of advice, please take someone who will drive you back home or at the least schedule a taxi service from home to hospital and from hospital to home.

Another discomfort you will have to deal with is wearing a hat. You will be fine of course if you don’t mind wearing a hat but you will have to make sure you wear something loose rather than well fitting. The main purpose of wearing a hat is to avoid sunlight. Your scalp after the surgery is very sensitive and you can actually get sunburn if you stay under strong sunlight for an extended period of time. Wear a hat suggested by your doctor and it will help you heal faster without complications. Make sure is a loose fit though, because you do not want the bottom side of your hat creating an abrasive contact against your scalp.

There are literally tens of thousands of men across the world that have benefitted by receiving hair implants. For some the benefits can be quite significant like the gaining of confidence that lead to something great, or something as basic as feeling comfortable again in public. The benefits will be heavily dependent on what you may have lost together along with your hair and for that reason alone it may be worth a few weeks of trouble.

Among the most popular or favored form of hair implant is donation, this could come from you or from a donor. This procedure will require you to do grafting and is a convenient outpatient procedure, meaning it can be performed without an overnight stay at the hospital.

Grafting involves a surgeon removing a small section of hair-bearing skin. Generally, the scalp back of the head is the prime real estate for acquiring necessary patch of hair needed for the procedure and this is known as the donor skin.

The patch of hair or the donor skin if you may then is partitioned into smaller pieces purposely containing varying amount of hair. The wide range of hair amount on every donor skin ensures the hair growth to look natural after the procedure. Each partitioned donor skin is then transplanted into the patient’s scalp using stitches. During the entire procedure anesthetics will be performed, but if necessary, you may ask for sedation for more comfort.

The completion of the procedure will require several sessions. For each session you can expect to have as low as 100 donor skin to be transplanted and as high as 1000 donor skin transplantation. The part of the scalp where the donor skin was acquired will be closed with stitches. It will be well hidden from the view of others by the hair in the surrounding scalp.

After the procedure, the scalp will be cleaned and bandaged to keep it protected and sanitized. The stitches can be removed after short 10 days of wait, but you will be required to allow it to heal for at least 2 months, preferably 4 months. Individual cases will vary, but generally 3 to 4 sessions are necessary to receive maximum benefit from the procedure.

It isn’t uncommon for hair implants patients to suffer from side effects such as, swelling, crusting of the scalp at the donor area, brushing around the eye, itching, numbness, but they should subside within a week or two. However, you should understand the transplanted areas will not feel comfortable for at least 2 months. Non-aspirin pain reliever may be used to manage discomfort, but if any side effects persist, you should visit your doctor for additional consultation.
